The pipe fitting connected to a pipe by socket welding may be called a socket welding pipe fitting. Forged/ wrought steel socket weld fittings are used in the pipeline where requiring exceptional strength of welded joints. Both the fittings and pipes are square cut, no need beveled end or preparation other than cleaning the outside, which allows easy welding and installation.  
To join pipe to Valves and fittings or to other sections of pipe, fillet-type seal welds be used. Socket Welded Joints construction is a good choice wherever the benefits of high leakage integrity and great structural strength are important design considerations.
